Glossary of Components mentioned by Jean Carles >> Return

Acetivenol (see vetiveryl acetate)

Aldehydes - these are the synthetic components that give the "perfumey" lift to classic perfumes.

Ambergris 162B - this was an ambergris/cistus compound in use at Roure (the company where Jean Carles worked). no longer used.

Amyl acetate - this component is formed by combining acetic acid (present in vinegar) and 1-pentanol. (pentanol is made by fractional distillation of "fusel oil", which is an alcohol formed by fermentation and which is present in cider, mead, beer, and wine)

Amylcinnamic aldehyde - component of cassia (cinnamon)

Argeol (Santalol) - component of sandalwood

Benzyl acetate - found naturally in many flowers. It is the primary component of jasmine and ylang.

Bromstyrol - hyacinth base - not used anymore for perfumery

Citral - the main component of lemongrass, produced by fractional distillation

Citronellal- a major isolate in distilled oils from the plants Cymbopogon, lemon-scented gum, and lemon-scented teatree.

Coumarin - naturally occuring crystal found in high concentration in Tonka Beans.

Eugenol - Isoeugenol - natural component of cloves

Geraniol - also called rhodinol,is the primary part of oil-of-rose, palmarosa oil, and citronella oil (Java type). It also occurs in small quantities in geranium, lemon, and many other essential oils. It has a rose-like odor, for which it is commonly used in perfumes.

Ionones - alpha ionone and beta ionones are found in nature, and are derived using chemical reactions. methyl ionone is not found in nature. all have violet/orris scents.

Geranyl acetate - is an organic compound that is a natural constituent of more than 60 essential oils, including Ceylon citronella, palmarosa, lemon grass, petit grain, neroli, geranium, coriander, carrot, and sassafras. It can be obtained by fractional distillation of essential oils.

Hibiscolide - a synthetic musk

Lactone MC15 - a synthetic musk, a.k.a Exaltolide

Linalool - a naturally-occurring alcohol found in many flowers and spice plants.

Linalyl acetate - natural ester - lavender, sage

Methyl naphthyl ketone - Oranger crystals - not found in nature

Methylnonylacetaldehyde (Aldehyde C12 MNA)

Nerolin - a naphthyl type odor - not found in nature

Phenylethyl alcohol is a natural alcohol that is found in a variety of essential oils, such as rose, carnation, hyacinth, Aleppo pine, orange blossom, geranium, neroli, and champaca. It has a pleasant floral odor. It can be obtained by fractional distillation.

Phixia ( hydroxycitronellal ) - main ingredient of muguet (lily of the valley) perfumes

Amyl / Benzyl salicylate - balsamic - found in nature, produced by series of chemical reactions

Terpineol - a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol that has been isolated from a variety of sources such as cajuput oil, pine oil, and petitgrain oil

Vanillin - naturally occuring component of Vanilla, traditionally produced by a series of chemical reactions.Beginning in 2000, a biosynthetic vanillin is prepared by the action of microorganisms on ferulic acid extracted from rice bran.

Vetiverol and Vetiveryl Acetate and Acetivenol - derived from Vetiver
